Every year between 50 and 100 million
animals are used for medical research. The more used ones are rats, because one
of them has 95% of its similar genes to humans and it’s easy to get more, so in
2001, 80 million rats were sacrificed for a medical research experiment, but,
it’s necessary to kill all these animals only for medical research? There are
arguments both for and against this practice.
One of the arguments for animal
testing is that thanks to their similarity to humans we have discovered many
cures to different diseases, like the vaccines against the tuberculosis or the
meningitis; also we have helped to the survival of cancer. In addition, we can
experiment without the fear of losing a person, we can have a lot of rats and
we don’t care if they finally die, but a person has family and a life and we
can’t take the risk to lose this.
On the other hand, the medical
research using animals is not 100% efficient because animals are not humans so
maybe they can survive to a treatment that causes a human death or maybe a
human disease is too much hard for an animal. Also even though humans are more
important than animals, they’re important too; without them, the planet will be
a big disaster, so we can’t kill all the animals we want to because that’s not
good. Animals have the same rights to live which humans have.
All in all, I’m in favour of use
animals for medical research because I think that with this method we can
improve so much in medicine but I think that we should try to kill fewer
animals.
