The story that I will tell you happened in 1942, when my grandmother was
teen years old. She was living in Banyoles with her parents and her younger sister.
She was in 4th school year in the primary school and at that moment
they were studying Napoleon in History. My grandmother’s uncle’s name is
Napoleon, so when my grandmother saw what they studied, she was very excited.
The teacher started the lesson with a question: Who is Napoleon?
My grandmother rise her hand, so the teacher asked her:
- Serra! Who Napoleon is?
- My uncle, teacher.
All the students laughed and she blushed.
- Can you repeat that, Serra? – asked the teacher, who was getting
angry.
- I said that he’s my uncle, teacher.
- This is not funny! Do you know what’s really funny? Your mark, a zero!
My grandmother went back home very sad and she started to do her
homework. A few minutes later her mom arrived from the market.
- Montserrat? What’s wrong? Why are you crying?
My grandmother explained her what had happened at school.
The following day, my great grandmother went to the school to talk to Montserrat’s
teacher and she explained that her brother’s name is Napoleon, and that my
grandmother hasn’t said that like a joke; she answered that because it’s true!
After that, the teacher talked to my grandmother, she apologised to
Montserrat and she erased the zero from his notebook. She was a bit angry
because though the answer was true, it wasn’t correct, but at least she didn’t have
a zero.
My grandmother always explained me this story when I was a toddler, and
now, sixty two years later, her friends still remember that story!
